are a good way to get me out of my room and into the movie theater. Not even the most fun session of Soul Calibur II could have kept me away from Kill Bill yesterday evening. The movie was about what I expected: minimal storyline, cool special effects, tons of gore, and lots and lots of LADIES FIGHTING (which is obviously the reason I went). The opening knife fight between Uma Thurman (The Bride) and Vivica A. Fox (Vernita Green) was rousing, if a little confusing. My favorite scene in the film was definitely between Uma and Chiaki Kuriyama (Go Go Yubari) because Go Go dresses in a schoolgirl uniform, has a crazy look in her eye, and wields a gigantic spiked ball mace on a chain that she kicks at Uma like a kickball. Awesome!
Lucy Liu (O-Ren Ishii) is also pretty cool, but as Bennett pointed out to me, she spends the whole time waddling around in this white kimono and doesn’t do any flips, not even in the final battle. There is a cartoon chapter that explains her background and the cartoon version of her wears a red vinyl bodysuit a la Britney, but unfortunately we didn’t see Ms. Liu in any outfit that fun. Daryl Hannah (Elle Driver), on the other hand, wears an EYE PATCH (!) and a beige coat with buttons and a belt drawn on with black magic marker. She also dresses as a nurse at one point and puts on a white eyepatch with a red cross to appear either more comforting or more creepy.
I give this movie an A+ because of the above reasons and also because of the great slow motion shots of Lucy Liu and her posse walking towards the camera with evil and confident looks. It made me think of videogames, and that is always a good thing.
