Yesterday the President delivered a nationally televised “f*ck you” to queer Americans. Today we return the favor and make it clear to our own legislators that they are either with us or against us on this. We will not be satisfied with a non-position, and we must let them know loud and clear as one voice.
First thing: Call, e-mail, and fax the White House to express your disappointment over the President’s decision to endorse writing discrimination into the Constitution. Do all three, they’ll never know.
E-mail [email protected]
Second thing: Call your legislators and ask not only that they oppose the amendment, but that they take an active role in fighting the amendment. This is especially important for those of us with “liberal” legislators who are willing to sell us out. Find the info here: Congress.org
New Yorkers, use NYPIRG’s Finder to find your local legislators.
If you live in New York, call your city council, call Mayor Bloomberg and demand their support. Mayor Bloomberg is in a precarious situation politically and we have to hold him accountable. He is the largest individual donor to the Republican National Committee in the country and he also happens to be the mayor of a city with a huge queer community. We cannot allow him to remain disconnected on this issue. If San Francisco can do it, so can we, but not without his support.
Please make some calls today. I know that a lot of you are as bored at work as I am, and have access to fax machines. Make sure that nothing else gets through to the White House today. We have to make it clear that the political card President Bush chose to play yesterday is the biggest of the many blunders he has made since taking office.
