Last night I saw Emmylou Harris and Mark Knopfler at the Molson Amphitheater. Toronto was the first stop on their North American tour, and it showed at the beginning of their set when they seemed a bit out of sync. They quickly came together though for Emmylou’s old song “Born to Run.” Emmylou also sang a few songs solo, including “Michelangelo” and “Red Dirt Girl,” and of course “Boulder to Birmingham.”
Emmylou and Mark are touring their new duets album “All the Roadrunning,” which is a phenomenal record mostly written by Knopfler, and they performed almost all of it last night. I’m admittedly more of an Emmylou fan though my parents used to listen to Dire Straits a lot when I was little. Last night they played a countrified version of “So Far Away” that brought back memories, and ended with an absolutely gorgeous rendition of “Why Worry” where the two shared a mic and the chemistry was so great that someone in the audience yelled “give him a kiss!” when they finished. Emmylou is officially still the reigning queen of the duet.
