!! OMG I’m confused: Gay video game !!

The above clip is from the video game “BULLY“, in which the main character goes around on different bullying missions. The thing is, the bully can also kiss guys. In the original version, the gay interactions had no bearing on the game. However, in the new “Scholarship Edition”, kissing male classmates is a goal and earns you an “Over the Rainbow” badge.
Here’s my thing – the gays come in all shapes and sizes, bullies and wimps, and so on. So yeah, it’s believable that a character like the one in the video game would want to kiss boys. However, I wouldn’t go around lauding this as a big step for gay issues, because in the game they’re making the gay an issue.
In “The Sims” you’ve been able to make gay couples forever and there were no “Rainbow Points” or anything that differentiated them from the rest of the neighbourhood. I know because I have spent many hours stealing Mortimer Goth from Bella and waiting for him to die so I could have all his money.

  1. OMG!
So, I don’t moan like that when I’m making out. Holy Hell, I couldn’t stop laughing over that stupid moan!

  2. Have to agree w/ Randy: well said!!

  3. It doesn’t seem fair to me to frown on the “Rainbow Badge” which is really just an achievement for the XBox 360 version of the game. (Every 360 game has achievements, they range from “Beat this level” to “Do this random thing you didn’t even know about”, it really all depends on what the developers want, and achievements like this are always optional).
Also, if you know the whole story (most of which is in the linked Towleroad article), then you know that when Bully originally came out it caused some mild controversy because of the gay content: “This got Christian conservatives really riled up. At the time, Christian watchdog Jack Thompson, known for his crusades against violence and obscenity in media, to condemn the game’s maker as well as Entertainment Software Review Board president Patricia Vance, to whom he wrote a letter that said: “Dear Ms. Vance, We just found gay sexual content in Bully, as Jimmy Hopkins makes out with another male student. Good luck with your ‘Teen’ rating now, Patty.”
Considering that the Over the Rainbow achievement seems like a retaliation to that letter, I think this IS a step in the right direction, or at least a big FUCK YOU in the right direction. I’ll settle with the latter.

  4. I don’t see anything wrong in this clip. The guys don’t say anything negative about their kissing. And the other characters that walk by look and say nothing negative. Just inmagine the hetro’s playing this game and if they want to get all of the bonus points will have to do an gay kiss. Sounds like an nice bit of revenge to me.

  5. There are six different guys he can kiss in the game. It’s nice that the 360 version added an achievement for kissing them often enough, because the game always had a “girlfriend” element built in, so the guy kissing didn’t originally count for anything (except a >100% health status, like with prostitutes in the GTA games).
And you don’t so much go on bullying missions. Jimmy is actually a very principled little delinquent. He’s been kicked out of all kinds of schools for his problem with authority, and at this one, he’s fighting the bullies, not being one.

  6. Wow, that is bizarre at least. And yet, I still don’t give a crap about videogames, why virtually kiss virtual boys when you can just go out and find a real guy?

  7. I never liked it that the Sims were totally bisexual. I always thought their orientation should’ve been a sliding scale like their other characteristics.

  8. That was strange..

  9. OK, I know I should like that but….
