The Queen Mother of the Golden Girls passed away this morning. She was 84.

Why did I feel like she would never die? Maybe because she looks like she's been 90 since the eighties.

Rest In Peace, Sophia Spirelli Petrillo-Weinstock.

Watch a montage of Golden Girls moments after the jump.

The Golden Girls was such an important part of my (and so many other gay men's) coming out experience. I hope that people remember Estelle Getty for the great entertainer and important cultural icon that she was. Rest in peace, Mrs. Petrillo.

OMG, all the good ones are leaving us! She and the other girls kept me through many bad times growing up. I know she will be rocking it in heaven too!

I'm so sad to hear about Estelle but she's been suffering from Lewy Body dementia for some years now and it' a horrible disease. As much as the world is a sadder place for her not being a part of it, I'm pleased that she will get some respite from this nasty illness. May she rest in peace.

I just wasn't prepared for this because I have lost so many people to death. I am in a fantasy world I guess. But I do extend my condolences to her family and the many, many friends (who loved throughout the world.) Rest in Peace Estelle (Sophia) Getty. Your sorely missed.

An interesting piece of trivia, even though Sophia played Dorothy's mother on the show, Estelle was actually more than a year younger than Bea. They were all wonderful on the show and Estelle will certainly be missed.
