Coldplay, “Life in Technicolour II”
We’ve been sitting on several clever music videos for the past month or so, but rather than show them to you in dribs and drabs, we’re hitting you all at once!
Unexpectedly, the best of the bunch comes from maudlin Brit rockers Coldplay. Set at a Village Fete in rural England, the band are recast as puppets performers who turn a Punch and Judy show into a full-on rock arena complete with pyrotechnics. “Life In Technicolour II” was directed by the brilliant Dougal Wilson, who was last seen pulling puppet strings for Dizzee Rascal back in ’04. Check out his artful storyboards here.Metronomy, “A Thing For Me”
In a “A Thing For Me”, boyish Brit band Metronomy and their female entourage are terrorized by a bouncing karaoke ball, which forces them to perform a series of hilariously inventive sight gags. The video was directed by boyish French directing collective, Megaforce. Check out their treatment for the video here.

Lykke Li @ NTBR Part 4 – “Hustlin'” from Drew Innis on Vimeo.
This isn’t a music video per se, but the way things are going on the Internet with all these live music blogs and web channels about bands performing in elevators, this footage of Swedish singer Lykke Li performing the Rick Ross song “Hustlin'” could easily become a video sensation. And I’m calling it now: Lykke Li will have guested on a rap record by the time 2009 is out. (via Hypetrak)Animal Collective, “My Girls”
Kwanza is barely behind us and music critics are already proclaiming Animal Collective‘s Merriweather Post Pavilion the best album of 2009. I haven’t heard it yet, but the single “My Girls” is a psychedelic pop delight. According to the New York Times, the new record is “propulsive and balanced, tenderly written and almost unrelentingly optimistic. In places it’s even a little lewd.” Lewd optimism is always a good thing. Oh yeah and the video is kinda cool.Lily Allen, “The Fear”
Anyone who’s ever accidentally eaten spiked mashed potats and then had to drive home on a lonely stretch of highway at 4am knows all about “The Fear” (or is it just me?). According to adorably foul-mouthed pop star Lily Allen, “The Fear” has something to do with insidious world of celebrity. Watch her tackle the subject with old fashioned English charm and poise in the above video.Rex The Dog, “Bubblicious”
Cutest video of January 2009 honours go to Rex The Dog, a canine from London who makes glitchy electro pop music. In “Bubblicious”, Rex is joined on stage by a soulful stop-motion house diva sporting an electrifying weave. Watch more Rex The Dog videos here.Bodies of Water, “Under The Pines”
Bodies of Water‘s “Under The Pines” is a cautionary tale about a greedy hunter whose lust for diamonds pisses off an vengeful forest spirit played by a domestic house pet. As you can probably surmise from the screen grab, calamity ensues.
