Feeling a little vanilla this Valentine’s? Searching for that sexy slow jam to get down to? Think ‘Babyface‘ is a Craigslist MSM search term? Well you’re in luck, because we have prepared a brief guide to 2009’s best Valentine’s Jamz, straight outta the black blogosphere to your spam-filled hard drive.
First up is Ryan Leslie’s “Valentine”. Though it’s technically a year old, the R&B crooner’s debut full-length just came out this week and his label apparently doesn’t seem to think it prescient to do something with this sweetly synthy song for a second year in a row. So we’re taking matters into our own hands. Watch Ryan rock out on a keytar Stevie styles (Wonder, not Nicks) above.
Next we have “Rompin’ Shop”, a raunchy riddim (set to Ne-Yo’s “Miss Independent”) that makes me want to grow a pair of breasts so I can use them to buff and wax the next Escalade full of suburban douchebags to pass me by on the street. Yes, it is THAT catchy. It’s also sparked outrage in Jamaica, apparently because some in that country don’t think Vybz Kartel and Spice’s hilariously bangin’ lyrical depictions of the length and density of their genitals is appropriate for radio airplay.
Not only is rapper Charles Hamilton easy on the eyes, but he’s apparently a huge Incubus fan. You wouldn’t know it listening to “Scorpion”, in which he lays down verse over top a soulful sample of Raphael Saadiq’s “Be Here”, an amazing Valentine’s Jam in its own right.
