!! OMG, She Natters: Camille Paglia Goes Gaga !!

camille1.jpg
Everyone’s favorite lezzie crank has something to say about the greatest pop star of our times or whatever. That’s right, cultural theorist, art critic and lesbian lunatic Camille Paglia would like to weigh in on the topic of Our Lady of the Gaga. And predictably, she hates her! (FYI, Camille Paglia only likes vintage Madonna and some Brazilian pop singer named Daniela Mercury?) Writes Camille in a recent profile of Gaga:

…Despite showing acres of pallid flesh in the fetish-bondage garb of urban prostitution, Gaga isn’t sexy at all – she’s like a gangly marionette or plasticised android. How could a figure so calculated and artificial, so clinical and strangely antiseptic, so stripped of genuine eroticism have become the icon of her generation? Can it be that Gaga represents the exhausted end of the sexual revolution? In Gaga’s manic miming of persona after persona, over-conceptualised and claustrophobic, we may have reached the limit of an era…

Compare Gaga’s insipid songs, with their nursery-rhyme nonsense syllables, to the title and hypnotic refrain of the first Madonna song and video to bring her attention on MTV, Burning Up, with its elemental fire imagery and its then-shocking offer of fellatio. In place of Madonna’s valiant life force, what we find in Gaga is a disturbing trend towards mutilation and death…

I dunno, seems like some of her arguments are worthy of a closer look. The end of the sex era and death for instance. She did wear a meat carcass to the vma’s for one example. And she really does seem almost anti-sexual in her androidian persona. I’m just saying the lady has some good points.

I always find people amusing, who are so negative towrd Gaga. Many Gaga fans get angry at these comments. I don’t. Great art should make people react. Make them mad, sad, make them feel like they have a place, it will make many scratch their heads. What go art isn’t, is ignored.
Most of the people who have a problem with Gaga are, like me, in their 30’s who say, she is no Madonna. She is no Cyndi. Wow, how we have turned into our parents. I remember my parents saying how those pop stars were just fluff. Nothing like the stars of their generation.
    And so the cycle continues.

I’ll grant that she’s correct – LG’s lyrics are insipid nursery rhyme nonsense. But in that sense she’s kinda like Beck (stay with me here) in that the presentation and show are the real point and lyrics are just placeholders. I’m not a huge fan, but I can respect that she’s going for an identity out there as opposed to following trends and hooking the hottest producers.

    Oh Paglia…
    Just shut up and dance!

josh, i think you’ll find google to be very helpful in answering your questions!

Paglia is an overrated overstuffed cunt; her remarks are typical and like all words coming out of her acid mouth should be ignored.

I agree with C Paglia. I have always been mystified by Lady Gaga’s success. I believe her costumes have an amateurish quality; poorly constructed, nearly a “home-made” appearance.
While I can understand younger people admiring her, she is in no way comparable to other icons ; Madonna, Cher, Cindy Lauper, for instance. This Lady Gaga will be far less popular within five years.

Is Paglia that out of touch/stupid that she doesn’t get that this is precisely the point of Lady Gaga?
Camille Paglia is an ignorant out-moded, out-dated, has-been feminist who never got it right in the first place. Anything that doesn’t fit her paradigm is bad – she’s like an evangelical feminist who sees evil in everything but her own version of reality. She’s obviously jealous, hung up (yet again) on her own shortcomings (ugliness) and failures to communicate (repeatedly dumped and self-hating lesbian closet hetero-wannabe).
That b is a c…Yeah I said it cunt…Lady Gaga is fabulous the madonna of this generation. She addresses homophobia and hatred. Whether she’s on stage or walking out of a restaurant, her commentary on those social subjects are consistent and cogent

Reading that quote made me laugh, only for the sheer duplicity in it.
“She constantly touts her symbiotic bond with her fans, the “little monsters”, who she inspires to “love themselves” as if they are damaged goods in need of her therapeutic repair”.
And a social critic for a magazine is what? only pointing out the flaws in society, never lifting a finger to try and help even a single person? Geez, you’re right, you’re really in a much better position to just pass critisism.
“”You’re a superstar, no matter who you are!” She earnestly tells them from the stage, while their cash ends up in her pockets”
And you write this, “preeching” against this woman all the while the cash whoever bought this paper and your article to read this is cash straight to your employers, straight to your pocket (i’m assuming you’re paid by the hateful words, but even if it’s just on an article-base – you’re still making money of this piece).
“Furthermore, despite showing acres of pallid flesh in the fetish-bondage garb of urban prostitution, Gaga isn’t sexy at all – she’s like a gangly marionette or plasticised android”
I’m not sure this woman got the point or that is ever was to be sexy as opposed to maybe Unique or artistic. Where do you get off telling someone was/is sexy? I had this weird thought that is was subjective, but maybe i was wrong. Or you. No, that can’t be it. right? And anyone who uses the term prostitution so loosley when referring to a person… well, you really don’t worth that much comment.
Hateful people (who are inlove with being hateful and more inlove with not acknowledging that) just piss me off completely.

O god really? This woMAN is rocking the grave and obviously is stuck in the 80s. Seriously if you don’t like GaGa then don’t hear her or watch her, there’s a billion artists out there. GaGaloo is here and she ain’t going nowhere.
Dan really? You say you don’t want to know anything about her but insist on bashing on her and our dearest Bmad. Puh-lease.

OMGers, direct all hate mail to Cammy’s email at [email protected]!

dan, i actually love allison’s girlfriend cpag. i do find her to be pretty funny but very rarely right?

Gaga was a surprise when she showed up on the music scene about two years ago; and dont get me wrong I’m not talking about the surprise you get when opening a Christmas present, I’m talking about the surprise you get when getting shot in the face.
Gaga came on too strong with her over stylized, over produced and occasionally nightmarish costumes.
Her music while being fun to dance to is completely vapid and uninspired, she’s not in any sense of the word original.
Gaga filled a spot that was missing in the music industry; the clown and sideshow slot.
What fascinated me if the utter awe from people at how “talented” she is. The fact is that Gaga is only a small piece in a huge industrial machinery, a money making machine if you will.
This is clearly seen when watching Gaga on stage, in a music video or listening to her “unplugged” (which is the only time I can stand to listen to her)
I feel like there is a scared girl in there somewhere, screaming “PLZ LOVE ME”.
I’ll give her this, she knows how to manipulate an audience, how to gain popularity by using the system to her advantage and then cashing in the big checks. She now has a power base in many gay men who got lured in by her statements of equal rights and who fell for her “style”…..
She will however continue her trend and will for a while at least enjoy the popularity she does now. MTV did after all give her 8 awards this year, but getting an award from MTV is like getting financial advice from a hobo.
MTV is no longer a respected music channel like it used to be, it’s now a 24h Bimbo Fest, of reality shows and completely moronic series.

Who is she and why should I care what she thinks?

Gaga is a crashing, overrated bore. Does she fascinate? I don’t know, I think she just plays dress-up. I don’t want to know anything about her. She is not fascinating or interesting. In contrast, Madonna was awesome from the minute she appeared. She had a life-force and a personality.
Regardless, Gaga is over-exposed. Her management need to get her off the stage and give it a rest for a bit.
PS I’m really surprised you got all cunty re: Camille — she’s a hoot and refreshing.

Well, I like Gaga AND I agree with CPag about her. Surely this is actually one of the less batshit recent quotes you could find from Cpag…although this obvs stands a better chance of riling up OMGers.
