An exciting week lies ahead for Kate Bush fans. The reclusive singer is releasing a new single tomorrow, an updated version of her 1989 song “Deeper Understanding” that is two-minutes longer than the original and features her son Albert singing as the ‘computer programme’. The track is taken from Bush’s new record Director’s Cut, a reworking of songs from The Sensual World and The Red Shoes. In addition to new vocals, the album features three complete re-recordings including a retitled version of “The Sensual World” featuring lyrics taken from James Joyce’s Ulysses (which she couldn’t get permission to use the first time around) and an all-new version of the tearjerker “This Woman’s Work”.
Here’s what Kate had to say about Director’s Cut in a press release:

For some time I have felt that I wanted to revisit tracks from these two albums and that they could benefit from having new life breathed into them. Lots of work had gone into the two original albums and now these songs have another layer of work woven into their fabric. I think of this as a new album.

Director’s Cut is out May 16 via EMI/Fish People. Track listing after the jump.

  1. Love Kate SO much… but this really feels depressing. Hate the auto-tune of Bertie. Often with Kate’s best work, work that really shakes us up (like the first time you listened to the Dreaming) it might take a few listens to get it– however I don’t think the initial recoil to this is because Kate is shaking us up. Rather it is because she isn’t. I hope I am being too premature in my concern, but like other comments, this could be really sad, if not bad.
Love you Kathy and I long for traveling any new sonic paths you forge for us. Perhaps you have with this venture. I hope so.

  2. Crap. Love HER, but SO drepressing. It really lowers thier talent when they use that horrible computer voice thing. Horrible.
