!! OMG, a revolutionary president: Obama officially backs marriage equality in Washington State !!

“While the president does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the president believes in treating everyone fairly and equally, with dignity and respect. Washington’s same-sex marriage law would treat all Washington couples equally, and that is why the president supports a vote to approve Referendum 74.”

— Paul Bell, the Obama campaign’s press secretary in Washington state, commenting on the President’s stance on the marriage equality referendum on the November ballot in that state

I think that by ending Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and by being the first sitting president to say that he believes sex same couples should be recognized the same as straight couples, he has done a lot more than the NEXT guy wil ever do. He’s got my vote.

I don’t get comments like yours, “I believe.” He hasn’t been enforcing DOMA with regards to deportations of married gay binational couples, he repealed Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, he’s come out for marriage equality and is now backing it in the states where it is on the ballot, and he’s in support of a repeal of DOMA, not to mention the myriad of other things he’s done that aren’t LGBT-specific.
If you don’t think you’re better off now than you were before, please tell me where you’ll be when Mitt Romney becomes our President. Go ahead, find one shred of evidence that he shows any support or empathy for gay people of any kind. I’ll wait. He fought as governor of Massachusetts to prevent same-sex couples from having both of their names on their childrens’ birth certificates, he’s vowed to back a federal ban on gay marriage, and he wants to reinstate DADT. If gay people think Obama didn’t do enough for them, I’d love to hear their explanation of why the alternative is better.

I agree with “I believe”. This joker had four years. As soon as he got into office gay civil rights got put to the bottom of the list (if it was ever on the list). He comes from the same “religious right” background as a lot of anti-gay politicians. If Biden didn’t open his big mouth about his feelings Obama wouldn’t have had to put up or shut up. The fact that he’s supposedly “not as bad as Romney” (assuming that’s true) doesn’t warm my heart.

Sorry you’re not better off, I believe. But I’m a helluva a lot better off than I was four years ago, and Obama is the most pro-LGBT president in American history. Obama may not be perfect, but Romney is certainly NOT a viable alternative to any self-respecting LGBT person. Don’t let the hypothetical perfect candidate be the enemy of the good, REAL president we have in Obama.

I believe it is a matter if WHEN, not if, on this issue. It is time. And I support it too. But the big Obama picture in what he offers us all is just not good enough. We should expect and demand better. He has had 4 years and has squandered it. I am not better off. NOW magically Obama has a plan. I voted for him, but not again. NEXT…
