The world’s first Latina Supermodel, Patricia Velasquez, has opened up about her sexuality in her new book, Straight Walk where she recalls that:

“While working in the modelling world in the 1990s, she was living a lie that was “tortuous” and “eroding my soul bit by bit,” according to Yahoo Parenting.

Patricia was inspired to come out after teaching her own daughter, 8-year-old Maya, about being honest and being proud.

“It’s very difficult to face your past, so I put off doing anything like this for a long time,” she told Yahoo Parenting. “But as my daughter started growing up and I was teaching her to be honest and proud, I knew it was time for me to set an example — and that meant facing my truth. For me, living life with truth and honesty is the one thing I want to make sure she understands.”

Patty also discusses her relationship with comedian Sandra Bernhard, whom she met backstage at a fashion show and that after they hooked up, Velasquez struggled with what had happened and slept with a male fashion photographer.

“In my head I thought, ‘I just wanted to prove one thing, and I did.’ There was no middle ground for me — a person was gay or not gay. Being gay was not for me.” But she went on to date Bernhard exclusively, without labeling herself. “I was deeply in love with Sandra in a way I’d never experienced before.”

Welcome to the club Patricia, and thanks for showing lipsticks out there everywhere that it’s okay be who you are.

  1. @Freddy *Points to picture included with article*
Patricia Velasquez played Anck-Su-Namun in the movie The Mummy Returns, and evidently that was enough to spark a comment filled with incorrect information. That’s why I made my post, to give the actual facts, other than that it has nothing to do with Miss Velasquez at all.

  2. What the heck does Egypt or “black” have to do with a Venezuelan supermodel coming out after being in a long-term relationship with another woman for years??

  3. Actually the ancient Egyptian name for the country is Kemet, and it meant black ground or black soil, it had nothing to do with the skin color or ethnicity of the people, but referred to the rich soil of the Nile flood plains. Egypt is an English modernization of the name, that comes from Ancient Greek, Middle French, and Latin sources.
Also Narmer is not the original pharaoh, but is considered the first pharaoh to unify both upper and lower Egypt. It has also been proven that the ancient Egyptians have been a mixed race from the very beginning. Black Africans, Mediterranean Caucasoids and even fair haired European types have always made up the race, there has never been an original all one “color” anything in regards to their history.
As for the Bible, it is certain that Africans wrote a great deal of it, but these included Hebrews, Egyptians and several others. No one country or ethnicity can claim to have written all the books contained therein.
Congratulations to Patricia Velasquez thought, for finding her voice and her happiness.

  4. Good for her! But the NATIVE…….the original Egyptians….were BLACK!!! The word EGYPT means Black! Look at the original pharoah…NAMER ( google it)……and they wrote All the Bibles….
