The Vice President looked back on the perspective his father instilled in him at an early age regarding equality, and made a speech acknowledging that there are still homophobes in America, and most of them are running for President.

The future politician was just 17, riding in a car with his dad in downtown Wilmington, Delaware.

“He was driving me into town… dropping me off so that I could run in and get an application to be a lifeguard…” he recalled.

“And we’re at a light, before it changed and I was about to get out and I looked to my right and there were two very well-dressed, conservatively dressed men, who embraced each other and kissed and walked in different directions—to their jobs, I assume.”

Given it was 1959, and Biden’s father, Joe Sr., was a used car salesman, what happened next was surprising.

“And I turned and looked at my dad. And I’ll never forget what he said. He said, ’Joey, they’re in love with each other. It’s that simple.’ And it’s always been that simple for me.”

  1. WHY OH WHY couldn’t my father be that amazing?! My dad would have driven over them. I wish Biden was my family in some way, I really like him
