!! OMG, reconsider the space: ‘i saw the sign’ !!

i-saw-the-sign.jpeg
Dance artists Brendan Jensen and Stephen Thompson have created a video dance piece in collaboration with videographer Duncan Alexander Forbes called “i saw the sign” that will premiere at the 2012 containR Project in Calgary next month.
They’re seeking funding to help defray travel costs and other expenses and we would encourage you to consider supporting the project. A bit more about the piece:

‘i saw the sign’ is a playful event co-authored by Brendan Jensen and Stephen Thompson. This work permits the audience to discover the seen and unseen boundaries of unfolding invitation to be present in a given space. Through a series of happenings, written and accidental, both participant and performer challenge the act of performance with the use of transformations and shifts in perception. Form, detail and the unknown contribute to defining each moment. Are you the ghost in the space that is felt but not seen, or are you the main attraction? The door is open.

!! OMG, now there’s an app for literally everything: Mike Ruiz launches “Pretty Masculine” !!

pretty-masculine.png
From what I can tell, Mike Ruiz‘s new “Pretty Masculine” app builds off the photographer and gaylebrity’s coffee-table book of hunky, body-painted dudes by allowing users to manipulate their own images with “elements” intended for “Pretty Maculine-izing” the photo. So, like, overlays of glitter confetti, leather chaps, and false lashes? However unnecessary this app may be, Ruiz’s promo video for his latest venture is at least worth a watch, if only to see guys with crazy patterns splashed across their ripped bodies. Check it out after the jump.

!! OMG, a Q&A: Produzentin and Mary Messhausen interview CHRISTEENE !!

christeeneOMG.jpg

With Toronto Pride already in full swing, we’re thrilled to bring you a special Q&A between singer/songwriter/performance artist/force of nature CHRISTEENE and diva duo Produzentin (below left) and Mary Messhausen (below right), proprietresses of the iconic queer party Hotnuts, where CHRISTEENE’s summer tour will kick off tomorrow night!

If you don’t already know CHRISTEENE:

CHRISTEENE is a sexually infused sewer of live rap and vile shamelessness, capable of adapting amazingly well to all styles of music. It is noted that CHRISTEENE commands a stage presence of furious intensity accompanied by a strict regiment of hardcore dance and destructive choreography.

Now onto the “INNERVIEW”…

!! OMG, futile pursuits: ‘Starry Night’ as told by dominos !!

Things we know now: Vincent van Gogh‘s “Starry Night” can be oh-so-easily recreated if you have 7,000 dominos and 11 hours to do nothing else but stand little blocks up on their end just to watch them topple over. Because there couldn’t possibly be a better use of your time.

!! OMG, it’s coming to New York: ‘Express Yourself’ !!

sean-oneill-liz-peterson-portrait-02.jpg
OMG, New Yorkers! You are all lucky to have the opportunity to see Sean O’Neill and Liz Peterson‘s fantastic and intimate performance piece Express Yourself later this month at the Incubator Arts Project. We saw the show last summer and everyone we know was talking about it for weeks after.

In this rigorous piece about the dynamics of performance, performer Liz Peterson and director Sean O’Neill explore the limits of media and form. Weaving together dance, personal confessions, synchronized video, and a pop sensibility, Express Yourself is a stylized depiction of a performance in progress. The show is framed by a virtuosic performance by Peterson, who navigates the ever-shifting boundaries of the work with disarming vulnerability and charisma. Winner of the 2011 Jury Prize for Risk and Innovation at SummerWorks, Canada’s largest juried theatre festival.

Created by Sean O’Neill and Liz Peterson
In Collaboration with Ame Henderson
