!! OMG, how booky: ‘It Gets Better’ in print !!

itgetsbetter2.jpg

After nearly 10,000 video submissions and 30 million views worldwide, the creators of the It Gets Better project have compiled some of its stories into a forthcoming book. The publishers say, “The book is a collection of stories from many people you recognize and some people you don’t, but each and every story will touch you, move you and encourage you to do better for LGBT youth.”
So we can likely expect to see submissions from YouTube favorites Chris Colfer, Ellen, Tim Gunn and Jake Shears — that is, if they want me to buy it. Dan Savage promises to donate his earnings from the book to support LGBT youth and more than 100 of the essay authors have contributed their stories free of charge. Which makes you wonder, who charged?

!! OMG, Mary Ann Lives: Armistead Maupin revisits Tales of the City !!

maryann.jpg
Wait, there’s a new Tales of the City book out? How did I miss this?
After formally retiring the long-running series in 1989, author Armistead Maupin has recently resurrected his crew of wacky San Francisco bohemians– all older, some wiser, and some much, much worse for the wear. But while I thought that the semi-recent Michael Tolliver Lives was more of a companion and coda than an official entry into the series, Mary Ann in Autumn, which came out at the beginning of November, is being billed as “A Tales of the City Novel.”
I just hope that Mary Ann in Autumn is better than Michael Tolliver Lives, because as a longtime Tales fan, the last one was so terrible and depressing that I almost wished I hadn’t read it. Joe. My. God. likes the new one, though, so there seems to be hope!

!! OMG, She’s Crafty: Amy Sedaris shows Kathie Lee and Hoda how to make castanets !!

So I was brushing my teeth and doing my elaborate facial cleansing routine with the Today Show on in the other room yesterday and could only hear little snippets of what was going on. When the craft lady informed Kathie Lee and Hoda that she was “STD free” I should have known it was none other than America’s funniest woman Amy Sedaris, whose new book, Simple Times: Crafting for Poor People is now out.
Watch as Amy forces Hoda and Kathie Lee into “ugly” bonnets, shows them how to do special crafting stretches and generally causes mayhem, much to the shock of the hostesses. Also, is it just me, or does Kathie Lee (I think it’s her) reveal herself as a closet Strangers With Candy fan with her, “fish it, fish it, fish it” aside?
