!! OMG, Marina And The Diamonds’ ‘Hollywood’ gets remixed !!

The latest precocious pop star to emerge from the United Kingdom is 24-year-old Marina Diamandis, a husky-voiced singer-songwriter who will release her debut album Family Jewels under the moniker Marina and The Diamonds (“The Diamonds” actually does not refer to her backing band, but rather you, the fans) in late February. This year is already off to a promising start for Marina: the BBC listed her as number two on its tastemaking ‘Sound of 2010’ list and her new single “Hollywood”, about her obsession with the all-American way of life, comes out on February 1.
We have two remixes of “Hollywood” for you to check out: a deeply gay house remix by DFA Records recording artist The Juan MacLean and a bounce-y new wave reworking by someone called ‘Monarchy Gliese’. Marina has just released a video for the acoustic version of the song, which is also very nice.

!! OMG, Thunderheist’s Isis Salam flies solo with “Avenue” !!

6336_123435616004_636151004_3502596_1801449_n.jpg
Isis Salam is best known for her commanding stage presence as the emcee in Canadian club rap duo Thunderheist. Since the band went on hiatus late last year, the Nigerian-born performer has been busy working on solo material with Toronto-based producer Alixander III. The word on the street is that Isis solo is more Grace Jones than hip-hop and judging from the glossy new wave number “Avenue”, the first track to hit the web, the comparison is spot on.

!! OMG, coming soon: The Knife’s experimental opera soundtrack !!

TheKnifeTomorrow.jpg
Swedish pop duo The Knife announced plans yesterday to release the soundtrack for the experimental opera Tomorrow In A Year. Inspired by the life of Charles Darwin and his book On the Origin of Species, the album will be available on February 9 in digital format and a month later in physical form. The music was commissioned by Danish theater company Hotel Pro Forma and composed in collaboration with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock. We interviewed The Knife’s Karin Dreijer Andersson shortly after the opera’s September premiere in Copenhagen and here’s what she had to say about the process:

It’s a choreographer and us making music and there’s a light designer and a stenographer and costume designer and everybody was supposed to work without knowing what the other ones did… Sound-wise, we have been trying to work theoretically with the music because we’ve never done that before. Really following in a subject to work with the music in ways that sometimes we have made music of Charles Darwin’s ideas about evolution in some specific species… He was a geologist in the beginning so it starts with… rocks. [laughs] And it ends up with a diversity of everything. It’s hard to say so much more about it.

The Knife have made the track “Colouring of Pigeons” available for free download to members of their mailing list. Preview the track below and if you like what you hear, sign up here to download it.

!! OMG, new Final Fantasy track: ‘Lewis Takes Action’ !!

FinalFantasy_by_DavidWaldman.jpg
According to Domino Records, Final Fantasy‘s third album Heartland is “a song cycle of Contemporary Fiction” and a “unique modern musical statement” that comprises “twelve concise songs informed by the traditions of pop, which are based on one long narrative concept, and played by an orchestra.” What that basically means is it’s a red-blooded concept album about a super hot religious zealot named Lewis who lives a homoerotic fantasy land called Spectrum over which Final Fantasy’s Owen Pallett presides as God. Things really heat up when Lewis takes off his shirt during the song “Lewis Takes Off His Shirt”.
We haven’t heard Heartland in its entirety yet so we don’t know how the story ends, but as a prelude to the album’s January 2010 release, Final Fantasy has made the song “Lewis Takes Action” available for free download. You can listen to it below and then grab it via Domino’s website.

!! OMG, Jake Shears and Stuart Price remix The Hidden Cameras !!

HC_Glasses_WEB.jpg
To whom does a super gay band turn to commission a super gay remix? None other than Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears and mega-producer Stuart Price, apparently. Whilst staying in The Hidden Cameras frontman Joel Gibb’s Berlin apartment a while back, the two pop superstars found some time to turn sunny single “In The NA” into a pumped-up dance floor work out with pitch-shifted vocals that kinda sound like what would’ve happened if Kool Thing turned to Kim Gordon and said “F*ck my face” right before he snorted a line of meth out of Thurston Moore’s buttcrack.
