!! OMG, he was living a lie: Plastic Bertrand !!

Yesterday the Belgian pop music world was rocked by the shocking revelation that Plastic Bertrand did not sing the 1977 hit song “Ça Plane Pour Moi” — or any of the songs on his first four albums.

In case you’ve been living well east of Luxembourg since 1977, here’s the 411: Plastic Bertrand is an over-the-top Euro pop performer whose “Ça Plane Pour Moi”, an unintelligible French-language redux of Elton Motello’s gay punk anthem “Jet Boy Jet Girl”, gained cult status in the United States.

After years of denials Bertrand admitted to Belgian newspaper Le Soir yesterday that the real singer was actually the song’s producer and composer Lou Deprijk, according to the AFP:

“I’m the victim. I wanted to sing, but he would not let me access the studio,” Bertrand said about the real singer behind the hit single, Lou Deprijk. “He asked me to keep my mouth shut in exchange for 0.5 percent of the rights, and promised he would make a new version with my voice, which of course he never did.”

So why did Deprijk get the shaft all these years? Apparently he’s not much of a looker. “I was even prepared to shave my moustache but the record label preferred this guy with his punk look,” he sniffed to The Guardian.

And so it goes… let’s relive the many versions of “Ça Plane Pour Moi” after the jump.

!! OMG, photos: Hercules and Love Affair live in Toronto !!

HERC_LEDE.jpg
There’s something satisfying, even thrilling, about discovering a new band or singer. At Hercules and Love Affair‘s concert at Toronto’s Mod Club this past Monday you could sense the collective eureka as the band’s two new singers Aerea Negrot and Shaun Wright pumped up the crowd with otherworldly vocal performances and fashions to match. Along with Kim Ann Foxman, who’s significantly stepped-up her game in the two years since Hercules’ first album, the trio brought the drama to Andy Butler and Mark Pistel’s booming house beats. It was like discovering the band all over again.
Check out a few snaps from the gig courtesy of photographer James Lourenco and be sure to read our illuminating interview with Hercules main man Andy Butler to find out more about the new album Blue Songs, Kim Ann Foxman’s solo project, his nerdy “Bad Romance” remix, his Kele collabo and so much more.

!! OMG, a Q&A with Andrew Butler of Hercules and Love Affair !!

chestyandy.jpg

The world is a much more exciting place now that Hercules and Love Affair is back on the scene. After releasing an acclaimed self-titled debut album in 2008, our favorite dance act is on tour this summer to get club audiences hyped for their sophomore effort Blue Songs, due out in January 2011.

Best known for the dance classic “Blind” (Pitchfork’s #1 song of 2008), Hercules and Love Affair is the brainchild of songwriter/producer Andy Butler. While the band’s first album referenced a classic disco sound and featured the vocal stylings of DJ-turned-singer Kim Ann Foxman, beloved torch crooner Antony Hegarty and high-energy R&B vocalist Nomi Ruiz, this time around Butler has a new line-up of singers and is looking to dance music’s future, rather than it’s past, for inspiration. Blue Songs, he says, will feature the modern pop-house bangers we’ve come to expect from the band, but also softer, stranger compositions.

For the summer tour, he’s pared back the set-up to focus on a glammed-up club experience that feature Foxman alongside two new vocal personalities: Shaun Wright and Aerea Negrot.

Last week we rang up Butler at his home base in Denver to chat about the tour, the new album, his new label MR.INTL Records, remixing Madonna and Gaga and his fabulous new hair. Read the Q&A after the jump and check back tomorrow to see photos from Hercules and Love Affair’s Toronto show.

!! OMG, watch your back under those ‘Patio Lanterns’ !!

Our Canadian readers will probably remember songsmith Kim Mitchell’s homespun classic “Patio Lanterns,” but I now present the video to the rest of you so you can scratch your head at everything from the odd lyrics to Kim’s bizarre hat/wig to his awkward interaction with the keyboard player (2:43) to his creepy smile (1:47). (Thanks to Margot for the tip!)
