Neil Patrick Harris hosted last night’s Tony Awards — his third time doing so — for a ceremony that finally felt fresh and fun again, with Harris opening the show to “What If Life Were More Like Theater?” (Although I’m pretty sure that life isn’t a thing like theater because in life Patti LuPone does not push around a lawnmower.) Check out the night’s big winners below:
Musical: “Once.”
Play: “Clybourne Park.”
Revival of a Play: “Death of a Salesman.”

!! OMG, it’s coming to New York: ‘Express Yourself’ !!

sean-oneill-liz-peterson-portrait-02.jpg
OMG, New Yorkers! You are all lucky to have the opportunity to see Sean O’Neill and Liz Peterson‘s fantastic and intimate performance piece Express Yourself later this month at the Incubator Arts Project. We saw the show last summer and everyone we know was talking about it for weeks after.

In this rigorous piece about the dynamics of performance, performer Liz Peterson and director Sean O’Neill explore the limits of media and form. Weaving together dance, personal confessions, synchronized video, and a pop sensibility, Express Yourself is a stylized depiction of a performance in progress. The show is framed by a virtuosic performance by Peterson, who navigates the ever-shifting boundaries of the work with disarming vulnerability and charisma. Winner of the 2011 Jury Prize for Risk and Innovation at SummerWorks, Canada’s largest juried theatre festival.

Express Yourself
Created by Sean O’Neill and Liz Peterson
In Collaboration with Ame Henderson
Incubator Arts Project, New York
May 24 – 27
Tickets: $18 (purchase here)

!! OMG, where it’s at: The Black Party back room !!

black party flyer.jpg
A new breed of DJs is taking over the Balcony Lounge at the 2012 edition of New York’s infamous Black Party and among them are two of our favs: San Francisco bear hunter DJ P-Play and New York gay underground mainstay Ryan Smith. (Also live on the ones and twos are T-dot’s David Picard and P-town’s Mark Louque.)
Organizers from The Saint at Large reportedly drew inspiration from legendary Berlin techno club Berghain in programming the back room line-up so, you know, it’s not just about getting a pool cue shoved up your butt in front of hundreds of onlookers this year — it’s also about the music. Like, for real.
If you can’t wait until this weekend, get yourself in the mood today by listening to this DJ P-Play mix recorded live at Honey Soundsystem in San Francisco on March 11, 2012:

Rites XXXIII: The Black Party takes place on Saturday, March 24 at Roseland Ballroom (239 West 52nd Street). Tickets are on sale via blackparty.com. Check out this year’s trailer after the jump!

This map (click to enlarge) is part of dashing French graphic designer Vahram Muratyan‘s new book “Paris versus New York: A Tally of Two Cities.” Like a quirky venn diagram of the the two city’s personalities, Muratyan’s colorful illustrations portray the differences and similarities between New York and Paris right down to our favorite office-party treats (cupcakes and macarons, respectively).
