!! OMG, iPee: Scientists souping up your iPhone to detect STDs !!

mobilestd.jpg
Great news! Instead of having a doctor stick a q-tip up your urethra, you’ll soon be able to discover your STD status (or a partner’s, duh) simply by taking a leak all over your fancy iPhone! I mean, sort of :

Mobile phones and computers will soon be able to diagnose sexually transmitted diseases under innovative plans to cut the UK’s rising rate of herpes, chlamydia and gonorrhoea among young people…

People who suspect they have been infected will be able to put urine or saliva on to a computer chip about the size of a USB chip, plug it into their phone or computer and receive a diagnosis within minutes, telling them which, if any, sexually transmitted infection (STI) they have. Seven funders, including the Medical Research Council, have put £4m into developing the technology via a forum called the UK Clinical Research Collaboration.

Fun bonus game: what STD do you suppose the man in the above stock photo just discovered that he has?!

!! OMG, She Natters: Camille Paglia Goes Gaga !!

camille1.jpg
Everyone’s favorite lezzie crank has something to say about the greatest pop star of our times or whatever. That’s right, cultural theorist, art critic and lesbian lunatic Camille Paglia would like to weigh in on the topic of Our Lady of the Gaga. And predictably, she hates her! (FYI, Camille Paglia only likes vintage Madonna and some Brazilian pop singer named Daniela Mercury?) Writes Camille in a recent profile of Gaga:

…Despite showing acres of pallid flesh in the fetish-bondage garb of urban prostitution, Gaga isn’t sexy at all – she’s like a gangly marionette or plasticised android. How could a figure so calculated and artificial, so clinical and strangely antiseptic, so stripped of genuine eroticism have become the icon of her generation? Can it be that Gaga represents the exhausted end of the sexual revolution? In Gaga’s manic miming of persona after persona, over-conceptualised and claustrophobic, we may have reached the limit of an era…

Compare Gaga’s insipid songs, with their nursery-rhyme nonsense syllables, to the title and hypnotic refrain of the first Madonna song and video to bring her attention on MTV, Burning Up, with its elemental fire imagery and its then-shocking offer of fellatio. In place of Madonna’s valiant life force, what we find in Gaga is a disturbing trend towards mutilation and death…
