!! OMG, watch your step!: Photos of Bosnia’s Seemingly Peaceful Countryside Littered with Land Mines !!

Brett_VanOrt_11.jpg
War sucks y’all! It is not fun, and the consequences that are left behind really aren’t cute either. Brett Van Ort‘s photo series Minescape captures Bosnia’s peaceful countryside that is still very littered with explosive landmines today.
Brett places the serene photos next to images of prosthetic limbs and different dangerous explosive devices, and the contrast is jarring! Check out the rest of the series after the jump.

!! OMG, it will scare your tits off: Killjoy’s Kastle: A Lesbian Feminist Haunted House !!

Screen Shot 2013-10-17 at 12.12.10 PM.png
Last night we had the pleasure of experiencing a world we’d never imagined we would venture into! The front-lines of the lesbian, feminist, afterlife! It was a terrifying, twisted, hilarious, AND totally informative adventure, and we’re glad we got the chance to see it! A bit about Killjoy’s Kastle: A Lesbian Feminist Haunted House:

Each Hallowe’en radical evangelical groups all over the USA and Canada build hell houses. Beginning in the 70’s, these performer-animated installations showcase a gruesome retribution for the sins of fornication, abortion, suicide, occultism, and– of course–same-sex relationships. This Hallowe’en Toronto artist Allyson Mitchell reclaims this hellish scenario with her crowd-sourced, lesbian-feminist, queer-fear-fighting and reinforcing Kill Joy’s Kastle: A Lesbian Feminist Haunted House.
Wrapping this American Gothic Hell House tradition with yard upon illustrated, elaborately decorated yard of spirited craft aesthetic, Mitchell mobilizes her “deep lez” commitment to radical queer world-making potential. Through it, she conjures new kinds of representations of feminist sexuality and queer concepts of community and activism.
Rug-hooked, crocheted, and paper maché’d constructions are horrific wonders for visitations of the undead lesbian community, some who’s ideas are happily buried forever and some who are hell-bent on remaining nightmarishly non-assimilated. Casting the spells of freaky feminist skill sharing and paranormal consciousness raising together with ghouls, bio-engineered monsters, indoctrinators, and avengers, this hell house is designed to pervert, not convert. These spirits dance in a complex mashy web of maligned feminist lesbian histories in tandem with the undead feminist monsters who insist on malicious gate keeping and movement stomping.

The house was incredibly well-executed, our tourguide was super informative, and we learned a lot about the world of our queer female and trans brothers and sisters! We highly recommend (or recommend highly?) checking out this house of horrors if you happen to be in the Toronto area!
Killjoy’s Kastle: A Lesbian Feminist Haunted House is on until October 30th, but get there early! (The line is worth the wait.)
BONUS! Check out this special Riot Ghoul mix of horrors that Don Pyle created specially for the piece!

!! OMG, free documentary: Matt Wolf’s “I Remember” on writer/artist Joe Brainard !!

Screen Shot 2013-09-30 at 11.28.38 AM.png
Last year, New York-based filmmaker Matt Wolf made a beautiful documentary about American artist, and New York School writer, Joe Brainard.
I REMEMBER‘ is based on Brainard’s memoirs and you can stream it for free this week over on Mousse Magazine’s VDROME. (There’s also an interview with Matt about the film.) Some more info from VDROME:

I Remember is a kind of biography of the New York School writer and artist Joe Brainard, who died of Aids in 1994 at the age of 53. I say kind of because it’s also a visualization or vivification of his wonderful book I Remember, which is in itself a difficult to categorize work – an autobiography, let’s say, by way of intensely sensual fragments of memory.
Using found footage and archival audio and visual materials to construct his narrative Matt Wolf creates a memento-like reenactment of Joe Brainard’s poem “I Remember”. Composed by an ongoing flux of recollections and images, the film maintains the fast cadency of the Brainard’s text while weaving a touching biographical account of the American artist and writer.

!! OMG, thanks for clearing that up: The correct usage of the word “BABES” !!

I haven’t been spending much time in LA lately, and about the only other time I get called “BABES” is when I run into the only girl from my highschool that manages to somehow still find me, no matter where I am.
Though, on the rare occasion that I may use “BABES” at a party, I want to make sure that I use it properly, and that I don’t embarrass myself in front of everyone.
London-based artist, Paul Kindersley is here to help, and is beautifully committed to clearing up any common misusage of “BABES”. Check out his tutorial above!

!! OMG, attention poindexters: The underground world of USB “Dead Drops” !!

dead_drop_3.jpg
Aram Bartholl, a Berlin-based media artist, has started a new way of sharing files offline and “underground”. During his residency 3 years ago at EYEBEAM in NYC, Aram started by creating the first of 5 “Dead Drops” which are:

part of an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. USB flash drives are embedded into walls, buildings and curbs accessible to anybody in public space. Everyone is invited to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your favorite files and data. Each dead drop is installed empty except a readme.txt file explaining the project. ‘Dead Drops’ is open to participation. If you want to install a dead drop in your city/neighborhood follow the ‘how to’ instructions and submit the location and pictures.

Since then, Aram has kept a comprehensive map of drops around the world, documenting the locations of each (Click HERE for an interactive more specific map). Check out a how-to video on how to create your own Dead Drop after the jump.
