!! OMG, a Q&A with Wolfram !!

wolfram daniel gebhart polaroid-crop.jpg

Why is the best pop music often the most emotionally intense pop music? As artists like Pet Shop Boys and Robyn have demonstrated, there is sometimes no better way to express our most euphoric, wistful and lovelorn inner thoughts than by indulging in the electronic swirl of the synthesizer.

It’s this type of emotional undercurrent that makes the debut album by Wolfram Eckert so great. Featuring the unique vocal stylings of dance music luminaries like Hercules and Love Affair, DFA Records’ Holy Ghost!, ’90s Eurodance mainstay Haddaway and ’80s gay club fixture Paul Parker, the album is like a chronicle of Italo, Eurodance and synth pop’s past and future. To find out why Wolfram is so in love with synthesizers, we rang him up in New York a while back. Read the full interview after the jump!

!! OMG, a Q&A: Liz Phair !!

liz-phair-portrait.jpg
Liz Phair has had one of the weirdest careers of anyone working in music right now. She’s gone from introspective bedroom strummer to indie tough girl Blowjob Queen to mom-rock songstress to tarted-up cougar sell-out. She’s been perpetually written off ever since the sleeper smash of her first album, 1993’s legendary Exile In Guyville.

And every time she seems completely down for the count, she’s resurfaced with the absolute last thing anyone would expect from her. (In the case of her last major release album, Somebody’s Miracle, that meant the worst thing of all: a boring album.)

Her most recent album, the independently-released surprise Funstyle, is a both an expectedly unexpected departure for Phair and a return, of sorts, to the f*ck-it spirit of her earliest work. It’s defiantly stupid (“Uh-oh/I think I’m a genius/Uh-oh/You’re being a peen-ius/Colada that is…”), unabashedly heartfelt, unflinchingly self-deprecating and witheringly mean. As the name suggests, it’s also, you know, fun.

With the record industry as we knew it all but gone, she’s free for the first time in almost twenty years to do whatever the hell she wants again. And Liz Phair has always been at her best when she thought no one was listening. Read our complete Q&A after the jump!

!! OMG, a Q&A: Ladyfag interviews Casey Spooner !!

ladyfag-casey-spooner.jpg
This entry is written by guestblogger Ladyfag.

When many men start creeping toward middle age, they buy themselves a red convertible: a possible last hurrah or an attempt to bring back the crazy hazy days of youth. Not Casey Spooner. Formerly the frontman for the highly successful Electroclash art extravaganza Fischerspooner, Casey has just come out with a solo album entitled “Adult Contemporary.”
He says, “It’s sort of the opposite now. I’m actually wearing clothes. I’m not prancing around stage in a jockstrap to Electroclash anymore.”

The man can change the music, but can the music really change the man? I wonder what his new show is all about and in the midst of our conversation he mentions that he and Jake Shears (of the Scissor Sisters) have been hitting the gym to see who can wear the tiniest Speedo for an upcoming video.

The single (a duet), is called “Spanish Teenager.” The times they are a changing… Or are they? Let’s find out! Read the full Q&A after the jump.

!! OMG, a Q&A with Perfume Genius !!

PG black eye.jpg
Way back in January we introduced you to the haunting piano music of Perfume Genius in the form of a cryptic Thelma & Louise YouTube video. Since then, we’ve managed to uncover that Perfume Genius is in fact the stage name of Mike Hadreas, a 29-year-old musician from Seattle signed to indie label Matador Records.

Earlier this summer Hadreas released Learning, a collection of lo-fi piano ballads inspired by the painful lessons he learned during a tumultuous, self-destructive period in his life. Thoroughly intrigued, we phoned him at an airport lobby in Philadelphia at the end of his first-ever North American tour, which included a performance at the big Matador 21 bash in Las Vegas, to find out more. The topics of discussion were varied, ranging from his cathartic approach to songwriting and his fascination with amateur fetish videos to his awful art school installations and his musical romance. !! OMG, a Q&A with Andrew Butler of Hercules and Love Affair !!

chestyandy.jpg

The world is a much more exciting place now that Hercules and Love Affair is back on the scene. After releasing an acclaimed self-titled debut album in 2008, our favorite dance act is on tour this summer to get club audiences hyped for their sophomore effort Blue Songs, due out in January 2011.

Best known for the dance classic “Blind” (Pitchfork’s #1 song of 2008), Hercules and Love Affair is the brainchild of songwriter/producer Andy Butler. While the band’s first album referenced a classic disco sound and featured the vocal stylings of DJ-turned-singer Kim Ann Foxman, beloved torch crooner Antony Hegarty and high-energy R&B vocalist Nomi Ruiz, this time around Butler has a new line-up of singers and is looking to dance music’s future, rather than it’s past, for inspiration. Blue Songs, he says, will feature the modern pop-house bangers we’ve come to expect from the band, but also softer, stranger compositions.

For the summer tour, he’s pared back the set-up to focus on a glammed-up club experience that feature Foxman alongside two new vocal personalities: Shaun Wright and Aerea Negrot.

Last week we rang up Butler at his home base in Denver to chat about the tour, the new album, his new label MR.INTL Records, remixing Madonna and Gaga and his fabulous new hair. Read the Q&A after the jump and check back tomorrow to see photos from Hercules and Love Affair’s Toronto show.
